Who develops the product

Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace is developed and maintained by Microsoft, a leading technology company with a long history of delivering enterprise-grade software solutions. Microsoft’s stability and commitment to innovation ensure ongoing support for the platform. It has to be stated though, that over the last few years, Microsoft have changed what their recommended analytics platform should be. It has been noted that Synapse is not receiving many feature upgrades at this point, with Microsoft’s efforts instead focused on Microsoft Fabric.

Product Maturity

Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace is part of the modern data stack, leveraging cloud-native technologies and best practices. While relatively new compared to some legacy data platforms, it has quickly gained traction in the industry and is continuously evolving to meet the changing needs of data professionals. Microsoft actively addresses issues and bugs, ensuring the platform’s reliability and stability.

Usage Examples

Data Warehousing

Use Synapse Analytics Workspace to build and manage data warehouses for storing and analysing structured and unstructured data.

Big Data Analytics

Leverage the platform’s big data capabilities to process and analyse large volumes of data from diverse sources, extracting valuable insights for business decision-making.

Serverless SQL

Synapse has a serverless SQL endpoint that provides users with the capability of running SQL queries over the top of a data lake.

Integration Capabilities

Synapse Analytics Workspace seamlessly integrates with a wide range of data sources, applications, and services within the Azure ecosystem, as well as with third-party tools and platforms commonly used in data engineering and analytics.

Target Market

Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace is primarily targeted at enterprises and large organisations that require scalable, high-performance analytics solutions. It is particularly well-suited for industries such as finance, retail, healthcare, and manufacturing, where data-driven insights play a crucial role in driving business success.

Pricing

Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace offers a consumption-based pricing model, where users pay only for the resources and services they use. Pricing is based on factors such as compute resources, storage, and data processing capabilities, with options for both pay-as-you-go and reserved capacity plans.

Reception

Data Engineers

Synapse has a mixed reception amongst data engineers. Synapse pipelines are generally regarded as an effective ingestion tool. Synapse Dedicated and Synapse SQL is more complicated. Synapse notebooks has a complicated spark cluster model that takes some tweaking to run effectively. Git is also ‘baked in’ to the GUI which means that some advanced functionalities are not available natively, such as rebasing (see Rebase Synapse Project).

Executives

Executives value Azure Synapse Analytics Workspace for its ability to accelerate time-to-insight, improve decision-making, and drive business innovation. The platform’s integration with other Microsoft services and its enterprise-grade security features make it a preferred choice for executives looking to modernise their data infrastructure and drive digital transformation initiatives whilst keeping data engineering services within the Microsoft Family.
